What causes diarrhea?

A condition is termed diarrhea when emptying of the bowels occurs more than three times a day, when the stool is watery or mushy in consistence and the amount of stool is increased. There may be flatulence, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting as well.

Diarrhea is regarded as being acute when it does not persist for more than 2 weeks. Where diarrhea lasts for over 2 weeks it can be termed chronic diarrhea.

Diarrhea is in itself not a disease but rather more a symptom and an expedient reaction by which the body rids itself of toxic substances as rapidly as possible. Acute diarrhea is often caused by bacteria or viruses. In the majority of cases acute diarrhea does not last long and ceases of its own accord. Where diarrhea is accompanied by fever or where there is blood in the stool, one should consult a doctor immediately. Diarrhea can be life threatening, particularly for babies, small children and for weak elderly people, due to loss of fluid and minerals.
